Popliteus Treatment: Unlocking Knee Motion with Targeted Soft Tissue Work
When patients are struggling to regain full knee extension or flexion, especially after surgery or injury, we can’t overlook the role of the popliteus.
This small muscle behind the knee often acts like a parking brake – it tightens up to stabilize the joint early in the injury or post-op process . . . and then never lets go. If it’s carrying tension or trigger points, it can seriously limit both ends of the range.
In this video, I walk through a simple, hands-on technique to release the popliteus – working from both the femur and tibia sides. It’s a quick but powerful way to restore motion, particularly terminal knee extension.
This is a great tool to have in your treatment arsenal when you hit that stubborn end-range barrier.
